Tying and trimming the twigs

The twigs are tied to the training wires

The ends of the twigs are taken off so the fruit will develop.

The twigs are usually tied and trimmed for the first time in early June when the vine is in flower.

Tying the twigs to the training wires helps orient the growth of the vine and provides a good microclimate for the best exposed grapes.

Trimming involves cutting off the ends of the growing branches, which sends the sap towards the grape clusters, so that the plant puts all its efforts into developing its fruit instead of growing larger itself.

The trimming height determines the total leaf surface of the vine, which, in turn, determines the amount of sugars that will be produced by photosynthesis.
