40 km east of Bordeaux, 6 km from Libourne, Saint-Emilion is located in the centre of the Gironde department.

The geographical boundaries of the appellation are formed by:

- the Barbanne brook to the north
- the municipalities of Pomerol and Libourne to the west
- the Dordogne valley to the south
- the Côtes de Castillon appellation to the east.


The appellation covers some 5400 hectares, representing:

- 67.5% of the total area of the winegrowing municipalities in the district

- 6% of the total area of the Bordeaux vineyards.

 

 

The Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellations cover the same geographical area.

Confirmed by Decree on 14 November 1936 , the present production area exactly follows the boundaries of the historical Saint-Emilion Jurisdiction, laid down by Edward I of England in 1289, along with part of the municipality of Libourne .

It therefore covers nine municipalities:

- Saint-Emilion

- Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes

- Saint-Hippolyte

- Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse

- Saint-Laurent-des-Combes

- Saint-Pey-d'Armens

- Saint- Sulpice-de-Faleyrens

- Vignonet

- and part of Libourne.
